During Biology lessons over the past few weeks class 2B2 has been working with the scientists from Scottish Earth Sciences Education Forum. This work has been supported by Scottish Power, the Scottish Government and Learning Teaching Scotland.
In 3 lessons the pupils were introduced to the problems of over production of Carbon Dioxide considering where it comes from, why and the different ways in which it can be controlled. Part of the project included building, in true “Blue Peter” fashion, with lots of plasticine, marbles, straws and water, a model of a carbon capture and storage facility. At this stage 10 of the pupils went to Linlithgow Primary to work on aspects of the project with P7.
The final part of the project revolved around science communications and 2B2 went round other classes informing pupils and staff about CCS (carbon capture and storage) models. They were also, along with some P7 pupils, invited to take part in the Edinburgh International Science Festival where they presented in front of an audience including officials from the Government and university scientists.
LA News spoke to Mrs Littlejohn who led the project and she said “It was a great opportunity for the pupils to work with operational scientists. They experienced the real world and all their practical activities made the learning come alive.
I was so proud of their work with the primary pupils and their performance at the Science festival was brilliant.”
The school took an active part in the recent keep “Scotland Beautiful Spring Clean” campaign.
Pupils from 1B1, 2B1, 2W1, 2W2, 2K1 and 2K2 worked in groups clearing the back of the playing fields close to the canal, an area of the cemetery and the streets between the school and the shop at Braehead. Over 3 wheelie bins were filled!
In late March, the above organisation invited some of our pupils to a seminar in Sun Micro Systems for various groups and bodies in the town. The purpose was to look at how Linlithgow can develop over the next 20 years.
Misha McCullagh, Jonathan Tulloch, Rebecca Scott, Sarah McDonald, Mark MacKinnon and Kirsty McRae formed the “children’s panel” which represented the youth of the town. One of the outcomes was to create a trust fund which would invest in Linlithgow using finances raised by using cheaper sources of energy such as solar and wind.
Sarah said “It was fun, interesting, we all enjoyed taking part and we would like to thank Linlithgow Aspires for inviting us”.
The postponed Spring concert went ahead on Tuesday 27 April in front of a huge and appreciative audience. Several of the audience commented on the quality and variety of the pieces played by the groups, bands, ensembles and orchestras. Mr MacKenzie told LA News “I am delighted we could go ahead. It was a big decision to cancel it because of the weather in March. I am so pleased the S6 pupils who are leaving had the opportunity to show off their talent one last time.”
We are delighted to announce that Hannah Brutin, Hannah Cudmore, Katherine Harrower, Joanna Tickle, Emma Blake, Sarah McDonald, James Welsh, Shannon Harris, Katherine Mackenzie, Christie Jamieson, Kirsty McRae, Catriona Charlton, Lauren Muir, Kate Ogden and Jennifer Cleland are all part of the West Lothian Schools Junior Strings Group who are traveling to Hochsauerland in Germany as part of a cultural exchange with the Council. Hochsauerland and West Lothian have been twinning partners for over 20 years.
Molly McWhirter (4K2) has been selected to play Cello with the National Youth orchestra of Scotland.
Hannah Miller (5K2) is also starring by being picked for the National Youth Choir of Scotland. This is a great achievement considering that the age range for this group is 16-25!
Congratulations to all our musicians and singers.
The Linlithgow Academy Association is holding its very popular QUIZ NIGHT in the Assembly Hall on FRIDAY 28th MAY. Tickets are priced at £4 per person and are available from all LAA Committee Members or at the School Office. Teams of 4 required.
After some years of not having the scheme in the school we are about to resurrect it. Mrs McDonald (Bus Ed), Mrs Chumley (Comp), Miss Adair (PE) and Miss O’Rourke (PE) are keen to get things up and running. It will take most of next term to organise all the strands of the scheme so that in August we will start our first bronze award group from the current S2 year group.
We are using the old saying “walk before you run” as our motto on developing the scheme. Pupils in other year groups will get opportunities in due course but we want a manageable group to begin with.
If you, as parents, have some interest or expertise in this area the school would love to hear from you as one of the key elements in schools where the DofE works well is parental support. Please don’t be shy, get in touch with any of the names above or leave your name with the office staff.
This year the seniors have been represented by two girls from S6, Mairi Blair and Rachel Scholes. They took part in 2 very prestigious competitions, the Glasgow University Union Schools Debating Competition and the English speaking union Mace Competition. In the Glasgow event they had 4 debates in the day and won 2. In the second event hosted in the school they were up against some experienced opponents when supporting the motion “This House believes a life sentence should mean life” and unfortunately, despite debating with style and commitment they did not qualify. The event was chaired most ably by Lucie Douglas (S5).
Rebecca Scott (S3), who is building up quite a reputation as a highly skilled speaker and debater, has qualified for the Scottish final of the ESU public speaking competition.
A big THANK YOU from the Eco group to everyone who contributed to Operation Womble. The stamps have been dispatched to Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and the cards are being recycled. Printer cartridges and phones will be sent to Oxfam at the end of the campaign.
Ms Jannetta told LA News “This has been very successful and we are always looking for new members”. Why not go along?
