Behind the Desk

It’s that time of year again where I sit and think where has all the time gone? The crucial SQA exams have just started and it only seems like yesterday we had last year’s diet.  The S6 year group is about to leave having successfully navigated the demands thrown at them since August 2003 and I wish them well in everything that lies ahead of them. Some other pupils in S4 and S5 have also decided to leave and I wish them every success in their careers. The Spring concert last Thursday brought it home to me how quickly time goes in this job. We had S6 pupils performing publicly for the last time but we also had budding replacements from our primaries showing they are ready to fill their shoes. How quickly will time go before I’m saying “Good bye” to them, never mind “Welcome”.

Cricket

Congratulations to Jake Percival of S1 who has been selected to play for the Lothian Schools against Loretto School on 9 June

Psychology

This is quite a mouthful but it is important to get the scale of this event! The Association for the Teaching of Psychology Scotland and their European counterparts (The European Federatrion of Psychology Teachers’ Associations) recently held their annual conference in
Edinburgh. Maybe not earth shattering news for the school until you discover that 2 of our pupils addressed the conference.

Eleanor Wigham and Bruce Port spoke on the course provided in the school by West Lothian College under our partnership agreement to delegates from Denmark, England, Finland, Germany, Holland, Iceland Russia, Spain and Scotland.

The audience was very interested in the students’ perspective and were warmly applauded for their well- structured presentation and how they answered questions. Yet again our pupils putting us on the map in such a positive way!

Dancing

The town continues to produce some real dancing talent. In the recent British Freestyle Scholarship 4 pupils of the school performed at the highest level.

Anna Lawrence and Madeleine Nicholls competed in the junior section while Lauren White and Eilidh McCall were both in the senior competition.

Madeleine was placed in the top six and Eilidh won the scholarship adding it to the Modern/Jazz scholarship she won at the end of last year. In fact Eilidh is the first ever dancer to hold both scholarships at the same time.

Coca Cola 7 a side Football

Congratulations to our Under 13 Boys team who won the West Lothian and just missed going on to the National final by coming second in the inter-district event held last week. Coach, Scott Brown praised the lads “They played really well and did us proud. On another day with a bit of luck on our side we would have made the final but the foundations are there for good teams in the school in years to come”.

Young Consumers

Our team of Iain Loggie, Jessica Martin, Kenny Port, Owen Shamhim and Rachel Cooper reached the Scottish Final held in the Scottish Parliament just before the Easter holiday. They got there by being the local champions.

The competition was compered by David Thomson MSP for the Highlands and Islands who, before entering politics was Director of Trading Standards with Highland Council. With rounds including Consumer Affairs, Food and Drink, Environment and Social Responsibility and Money and Credit, our team battled well eventually coming 3rd. Well done to our Young Consumers who were coached by Mrs Sandhu.

Learning Opportunities

Every year the school runs classes in our timetable that are not full to capacity.

Why not take advantage of these spaces by considering returning to school to study something that has always interested you. There are lots available – French, Biology, English, Computing Hospitality etc etc etc.
