What a truly wonderful newsletter to end the year. So full of good news where the pupils have shown so much talent and energy.
I really look forward to each issue of LANews as it makes me very proud to be the Head Teacher of such a fine group of children.
We have just finished the first Induction Day with the new S1 and from what I saw today they are going to add to the quality of the pupils in the school.
I hope you all have a good holiday when it comes. I hope not to start the new session as I did last year and be here on the first day! That hospital stay seems a long time ago. All the best for the summer holidays.

Wednesday 3rd June saw the school hold its inaugural Merit Certificate Evening in the Assembly Hall. A packed audience watched the 92 pupils who received a “distinction” grading receive their certificates from the Guest of Honour, Mr Patrick Sweeney, the Council’s Head of Education.
Both Mr Sweeney and Mr MacKenzie praised the pupils on their achievement of receiving at least 10 nominations from staff. Mr MacKenzie also explained to the audience why he felt it was important to hold such an event. He said “We must recognise and be proud of the achievements of our pupils”. He added that from the moment he was first involved in the scheme that he wanted to give it a higher profile within the school’s calendar of events.
As well as watching the parade of talented pupils mounting the stage the audience was entertained by the junior guitar group who played “El Noi de la Mare” and “Tango” under the leadership of Mr Paul Devery.
Congratulations to Joanne Beedie and Fiona Cruickshanks on being selected for the East Under 15 team for the Inter District competition. The competition was held in Edinburgh on Sunday 7 June where the East District emerged winners. Both girls performed very well, with Fiona playing in an unfamiliar defensive role and deservedly winning the Most Improved District Player Award. When LA News caught up with Fiona she was too shy to say anything but her friend Nikki Robertson said “We are all very proud of her”. Well done to both.
While on a sporting theme we have to mention that we have several cricketers emerging at District level. GregorThomson and Ali Napoli have been selected to play for Lothian schools against Loretto School.
Currently the following players are all representing their area team in their age group. Under 13 – Jordan Hamilton, Jake Percival and John Strachan. Under 15 - Ali Napoli and Gregor Thomson.
Again, well done to all of them.
Again we have to say congratulations to Madeleine Nicholls (1W3) who, along with her partner Douglas Shaw (former pupil) won gold at the Scottish National Pairs Championship. They then went on to compete in the British Championship and won a silver. A very proud mum, Jill, told LA News that she was very proud of Madeleine and Douglas’ performances.
Well done to Marnie Whitefield on being selected for the West Lothian team who swam at the 38th International Festival in Neheim-Husten, Germany.
Rachel Cooper and Gordon Boyle have both passed their Young Enterprise exam while Scott Fyfe, Kenneth Port and Assim Sattar passed with Credit. Many thanks to Mrs Aikman (Bus Ed) for her support during the year.
The school has just won its third Gold Award for our activities in 2008/09. Well done everyone.
