Department Aims

The aims of the Art Department relate directly to those of the School, and to the requirements of the Scottish Office Education Department.

‘Art’ should be interpreted here as ‘Art and Design’.

The Art Department staff aim to;

• stimulate and maintain pupil interest, curiosity, imagination and enjoyment of Art

• employ teaching methods and resources that allow all pupils, irrespective of gender and/or ethnic origin to have equal access to Art and to experience success and enjoyment in their work

• enable pupils to be familiar with a body of artistic knowledge, skills, principles and vocabulary. Pupils should become competent and confident in producing images, artefacts and works of art responding to the work of others, and to features of the natural and man-made environment, with reasoned arguments and emotional reactions

• enable pupils to understand the significance of Art and its value as a pleasurable and fundamental experience develop an awareness in pupils of the influences of Art, past and present, on the individual and the local, national and international communities

• enable pupils to develop a range of desirable personal qualities such as safety awareness, politeness, perseverance, initiative and independence. The aims of the Art Department are put into practice through the courses and the methodology described below

• embrace assessment as a tool for learning to promote independent learning and nurture creativity

• contribute to the curriculum for excellence and enable all young people to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributers.
